Employee Benefits Always a Challenge
Session 1: (9:30-10:30)
Hear some early insight into Gov. Baker's newly released bill on health insurance reform "proposing sweeping changes."
Speaker: Liz Murphy, Senior Director of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, Massachusetts Association of Health Plans
Session 2: (10:30-12:00)
PFMLA (Paid Family and Medical Leave Act), Municipalities and School Districts are not out of the woods!!
"For the most part, municipalities and municipal and regional school districts have disregarded the PFML because it does not apply unless the municipality (which would also cover the municipal school district) or regional school district accepts it. At the same time, we are starting to see the impact of the law in collective bargaining. In some cases, the bargaining representative is not well-informed and the issue can be resolved by telling them the PFML does not apply to municipalities or school districts. In other cases, particularly in the Commonwealth's most progressive communities, bargaining representatives are being more aggressive, claiming that the law sets a new standard that should be accepted by the municipality or regional school district. Regardless of the communities involved, municipal and school leaders need to be prepared to address these issues." This session will look at the provisions of the new law and look at some common leave benefits offered by municipalities and how they stack up against the provisions of the PFML.
